                               PRESIDENT LYN SABERG

President’s Message - Lyn Saberg

Yes, my first year as President has gone by very quickly, and what a wonderful honor it has been to represent our Congregation, to share significant moments in the lives of our congregants, and to work with our Rabbi, Cantorial Soloist, Office Administrator, Officers, Board Members and the many individuals that volunteer here at Etz Chaim.  It has been incredibly exhilarating and rewarding to stand before our congregation and the community at-large as President and Todah Rabah to all of you whose good work and positive energies have provided me such an opportunity. Teamwork is what allows our congregation to carry out our mission. We collaboratively build upon our successes, learn from each other, and reap personal and communal fulfillment through our efforts. If you’re already involved, or would like to be involved, I ask that you give some thought to how we can work together over the next year, I would welcome your involvement.

I want to express a warm and sincere Thank You to the one hundred and ten members of our Etz Chaim family who were able to attend our annual Congregational Meeting on May 18th, where we elected two new Officers and four new Directors for our Board. I am also happy to report that our Congregation has voted to approve a new three-year contract for our Rabbi, Harold F. Caminker.  Mazel Tov Rabbi Harold!!  Congratulations to Scott Dolinsky, who will continue to serve as our Vice President of Ritual and Education and to Mark S. Schweizer, our newly elected Vice President of Fundraising. Our four new Board members, Gerald Hirschtritt, Rabbi Noah Kitty, Steven Schwabish and Gloria Stein will be joining our current Board members serving as the leaders of Congregation Etz Chaim. You will have the opportunity to welcome them at the Board Installation, which will be scheduled for mid-August. Also joining our Board will be the newly elected President of the Men’s Club, Jesse Monteagudo, and Congratulations Jesse!

Now, on to business. You all should have received your Membership renewal invoices for June 2008 through May 2009 by now. I hope that you have attended to renewing your membership, and ask that if you have any questions, need special assistance, or wish to discuss payment options, that you contact Sherry at the office. As you know, your continued financial support is our lifeline, and ensures that Etz Chaim, YOUR Synagogue, is here for years to come. We would also love to have you consider raising your membership to a Chai Level. If you are considering this, please contact Mark S. Schweizer who will be happy to discuss this with you. Remember, your paid membership includes your tickets to our High Holy Day services, which will be held again this year at the Religious Science Center in Wilton Manors.

In conclusion, I would like to thank each of you for the support and inspiration with which you, my Etz Chaim Family have provided me. I am honored and humbled to serve as your Synagogue President, and I look forward to working with each of you to realize our goals. I wish you all a happy, healthy and safe summer.

B’shalom,

Lyn

Help Wanted!

Like most non-profit organizations, temples, charities, etc., Etz Chaim is in need of volunteers. Our temple functions around a few core committees made up of members who give a few hours each month to help us in our various disciplines. We have immediate openings in our:

Social Committee (arranges congregational activities, outings, dinners, events, and works with the Sisterhood and Men’s Club on the scheduling of their events).

Bikkor Cholim Committee (contacts members who are ill or need some assistance, consoles those who recently lost a loved on and works closely with the rabbi).

Marketing Committee (coordinates our advertising and public relations)

Fundraising Committee (works on annual Gala and other fund raising events)

Membership Committee (contacts potential members, helps out at recruiting events, greets new people).

TTO Committee (works with local charities and organizations to assist with their needs as well as outreach programs to let the community know Etz Chaim cares).

House Committee (manages the day to day needs of the facility, coordinates décor issues, and looks for possible tenants when the temple is not being used).

If you cannot decide which committee you best fit into, you can always volunteer to help out in mailings and special event set-ups. If you can spare a few hours each month, usually on a weekday evening, call the office. We will put you in touch with the proper committee head. (By the way, the pay is lousy, but the benefits of knowing you helped someone are fantastic!)
