Men's Club Current Events Select:  'Upcoming Events' or this link

Congregation Etz Chaim’s Men’s Club is currently celebrating its first five years of existence as an integral part of the Synagogue family and as a viable organization in its own right.  If anyone is responsible for the Men’s Club success, it is David Yalen.  David is the Men’s Club Founding President and, until this year, its only president.  It was David who came up with the brilliant idea of forming a social club for Jewish men and their partners and, with the able assistance of Frank Ploener, Dave Charles, Michael Shapiro and others, made that idea a reality.  Inspired by the success of the CEC Sisterhood, David and his colleagues made the Men’s Club an important part of the Etz Chaim family, making major contributions to the Synagogue’s financial (the Men’s Club is a member of the Chai Society) and social life.

Second only to David Yalen in his contributions to the Men’s Club is Dr. Frank Ploener, a founder of the Men’s Club who like David is only now stepping off the Board.  Frank led the Men’s Club popular Book Discussion Group and also served as the Club’s all-important IT Supervisor.  Another hard-working Board member, Steve Schwabish, is also stepping off after a productive year organizing the Men’s Club popular, first Friday Night Dinners.

Though the contributions of David, Frank and Steve will be missed, other members have remained active or have come forward to serve in the Men’s Club Board.  Dave Charles, also a founder of the Club, remains as Treasurer.  Michael Tublin continues to supervise the MC Onegs that we sponsor on most first Friday nights.  (By sponsoring an Oneg, we free the Oneg Committee and the Synagogue as a whole from taking care of this matter once a month.)  Ken Tewel, who recently hosted our popular Purim Hat Party, succeeds Dr. Ploener as both IT Supervisor and leader of the Book Discussion Group.  Dr. Mark Schweizer is now in charge of our first Friday Night Dinners.  Last but not least, Alex Rosenberg has joined our Board as Social Chair.  With talent like this, we can’t go wrong.

Membership in the CEC Men’s Club is open to Jewish men (and those men considering conversion to Judaism) and their Jewish or non-Jewish male partners, whether or not they are members of Cong. Etz Chaim.  In addition to our first Friday Night Dinners and Onegs - and our popular Rosh Hashanah Luncheon (more to come) – the Men’s Club sponsors a whole variety of social and educational events, some limited to MC members only and some open to the Synagogue community as a whole.  Please read future installments of this column or call 954-567-8599 ext. 3 to find out what the Men’s Club has in store.
